Ightham Mote is a stunning moated manor house, dating from 1320, and nestles in a small valley close to Sevenoaks in Kent. The American businessman Charles Henry Robinson left the property to the National Trust in 1985. This was the largest conservation project ever undertaken by the National Trust, costing £10m and lasting 15 years. I love all the Trust properties, but so far I think this is the most beautiful. The inside of the house spans many centuries and is extraordinarily preserved and restored, the rooms give a great insight into the life of Ightham's last occupant, and the Trust's friendly and knowledgeable staff are always on hand to explain the finer details of the house's history.
